Brick estimate basics

This brick calculator counts bricks for a straight wall face. It uses wall length, wall height, brick face size, mortar joint thickness, and a waste allowance. It does not estimate mortar volume, wall thickness, labor, or material cost.

How many bricks do I need for a wall?

The count depends on two areas: the wall area and the area covered by one brick plus its mortar joint. A larger brick face covers more area, so fewer bricks are needed. A thicker mortar joint increases the module size and slightly reduces the brick count.

The calculator first works out the visible wall area. Then it divides that area by the brick module area and adds waste. The result shows the base number of bricks and the recommended total after the waste factor.

How mortar joints affect the count

The joint thickness is part of the brick module size. That means the count is based on brick faces plus mortar spacing. It does not calculate the volume of mortar, cement, or sand.

Openings, corners, piers, bond patterns, and cut bricks can change the real order quantity. If the wall has windows, doors, returns, or a non-standard pattern, use the result as a starting point. Adjust the waste factor or calculate sections separately.

Example calculation

This example uses metric units: a 10 m by 2.4 m wall, 0.215 m by 0.065 m bricks, a 0.01 m mortar joint, and 10% waste.

How many bricks do I need for a wall?

How does the brick calculator work?

It divides wall area by the area of one brick module. The module includes the brick face plus the mortar joint added to brick length and height.

Does this include mortar volume?

No. The mortar joint is used to estimate spacing between bricks, but the calculator does not estimate mortar, cement, or sand quantities.

Why is brick width not included?

This version counts visible brick faces for a wall face. Brick width matters for wall thickness and mortar volume, which are outside the current calculation.

What waste factor should I use?

Use a small allowance for cuts, breakage, chipped bricks, and handling. A simple straight wall may need less waste than a wall with corners, returns, or many cuts.

Can I use inches or millimeters?

Yes, as long as every length input uses the same unit system. Do not mix inches with feet or millimeters with meters in the same calculation.

Does this account for doors and windows?

Not directly. For walls with openings, calculate the solid wall sections separately or subtract the opening areas before using the estimate.
